Babel – International Type Symposium
Babel est un colloque international sur la typographie et le design-graphique, près de Francfort en Allemagne. Depuis maintenant deux ans, l’enseignant Sascha Lobe et les étudiants de la Hfg (Hochshule für Gestaltung Offenbach) invitent graphistes, typographes et intervenants durant une journée. La journée est ponctuée de conférences et workshops, l’inscription est gratuite. La dernière édition « So Social » s’est déroulée il y a quelques jours, le 26 novembre 2013. Elle avait comme thème principal les interactions entre les designers.
Babel #2 (2013) – « So Social »
« Stefan Sagmeister once remarked that a famous graphic designer is about as important to society as a famous electrician. There’s no point in discussing the justness of this fact. However, the quotation still describes the relationship of graphic design and society in 2013, and probably for a long time to come. Although typographers and graphic designers increasingly see themselves as producers of cultural capital relevant to society, they do not necessarily receive mutual recognition because of that. The digital world has obviously changed the way graphic designers see each other, however. They are aware of each other, blogging, networking and « liking » one another – creating a big, international « community » who give each other the acknowledgement refused
them elsewhere. »

Babel #1 (2012) – « Non Latin »
« Do we understand each other?
What does the international typography scene have in common and what are the differences?
The focus of the first issue of the babel typo symposium is on other writing systems: »non latin«. A good twenty years after the introduction of the computer, the next revolution has taken hold of everyday graphic design almost unnoticed. Thanks to digital standards such as Unicode or OpenType, globalisation is now definitively taking place in typography too – interestingly, the predominance of western, »Latin« writing seems to be waning. Famous international designers let us look beyond the western perspective with their projects. »
